Jammed screen door repair

Checking and Cleaning

The best thing to do when your sliding screen door is jammed is to check several things to find the problem.  First you want to make sure your tracks and channels are cleaned and oiled properly.  For cleaning we recommend using a hose to hose off the dirt and little rock from the tracks, you don’t have to take the patio screen off to do this, just wash away dirt and let it dry.

lubricating

For lubrication on the track we recommend once tracks are cleaned and dry, spray some wd40 on bottom and top channel and on wheels as well for best results.  Then it’s time for roller adjustment and you will need a screw driver.  turning clockwise the door will lift the frame off the track and set it free to slide properly.  If you decide you would like some help doing this please give me a call and I’ll make sure you have a perfect screen before I leave.  My areas are! Thousand Oaks, Lynn Ranch, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Lake Shearwood, Newbury Park, Camarillo, Conejo Valley, Moorpark, Happy Camp, Santa Rosa, Pleasant Valley, Simi Valley, Woodranch, Woodland Hills, Westhills, Oxnard, Ventura and Calabasas. Call me and I’ll take care of all your needs.

Does you sliding screen door fall off track?

The main purpose of the sliding screen door is to slide on the track, if it falls off then the screen is not working properly and need to be fixed. You should not have to force the screen across the opening, if it is sticking or getting caught it probably needs to be adjusted. Sometimes the rollers are not metal and may be worn down.

If the screen door is fairly new and the wheels are not raised enough for the screen to glide right it will fall off track and stick. Try reaching over at the bottom raising slots which are next to the roller and with a fillips screw driver turn clock wise to lift the patio door, if this does not help then you may need to have a mobile service come to your home and give you a free estimate. I service: Thousand Oaks, Lynn Ranch, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Lake Shearwood, Newbury Park, Camarillo, Conejo Valley, Moorpark, Happy Camp, Santa Rosa, Pleasant Valley, Simi Valley, Woodranch.

Time to Buy a Sliding Screen Door.

When your ready to buy a sliding screen door you need to know if you are going to install it yourself 0r call a mobile screen company and have them do the installation. Doing the job yourself is a bigger task than you might think. A sliding screen door moves a lot everyday and It needs to be made and installed right. There are many frame and mesh types to choose from and some other things you should know before you buy a sliding screen door. Don’t make the same mistake many homeowner do by installing a screen doors that does not fit right or slide right, if you do everyone in the household will constantly be fighting with it to try to get in and out of the house.  If you have a screen company install one, it will be done right and last about 20 to 30 years.

Installing the screen door yourself and what you will need:

If you want to take on the task of buying and installing a sliding screen door yourself  you will need to know how to measure the opening right, too much and the screen will get jammed too little and your new screen door is going to slide right off the track. You will also have get some tools ready and be able to lift and move the large screen door around.   To transport the the sliding screen door you will need a vehicle large enough to fit it, do not tie it to the roof of your car because it will old with the wind.

Before buying a sliding screen door ask yourself, Is this patio screen doors going to be used a lot or very little?  If this door your looking for is going to take a bit of abuse you should look for an extra thick frame, if not chances are you will be replacing it.  The part that usually goes first is the part where the plastic handle is.  If you have kids and pets you will probably want something more heavy-duty that last longer.  If  you have a view there is also clear screen mesh that won’t block it. The clearest mesh is called charcoal. Pet Screen is the extra thick screen mesh for sliding screen doors and it is the strongest screen mesh sold.  It is made out of fiber glass and is 7 times stronger than the ordinary window screen material.  Dogs, kids and even wild animals will not stand a chance with Pet Screen.

Having a mobile screen company install a sliding screen door for you:

If you call a screen company you will need to make sure that they are a “mobile screen company” and  that they work in your area. A mobile screen company comes to you and does all the work on-site ensuring that everything is done right the first time and the measurements are as exact as possible.  Measuring the opening where the screen is going to be installed is most important and there is a technic to it. The experience the Mobile Screen Service has and how they guarantee their work is also very important.  We do not recommend buying sliding screen doors with plastic handles an plastic rollers.

On the spot screen repair service

Screens are the one thing in a home, that people don’t know who to call to get them fixed.  Most clients will call a handyman repair service to get the job done but those days are over. Marcelo’s Screens is a mobile screen repair service that will come to you and get the screen job done on site. A handyman service dose not specialize in screen and will not make them right as a matter of fact we work very closely with several professional handyman services that will not ouch a screen job just because there is some technic involved that can become a bit of a problem.

Window and sliding screen door making is not as easy as it might look like, you need to know how to measure right so the screen frame does not fall off or give you trouble getting it off when it’s time to wash the windows. To measure right you need to know that there are hundreds if not thousands of window and door manufactures that have come and gone in the past 50 years leaving us with having to really be good measuring. How do you become good measuring screens…easy, you just do it for 17 years and you do thousands of jobs.  Trust us when we say that measuring a screen is not easy and thats why a handyman repair service will not do the job of making and installing screens right.

Most handyman services do a lot but don’t specialize in anything, they are good for many things but screens are just not one of them. If you don’t believe what we say just give the handyman of your choice a call and ask them if they would like to take on a screen job and see what they tell you, NO thats what you’ll hear because making a screen is not easy, It looks easy but it’s not. If you think the teenagers working at Doit Center for the summer have the experience to get the screen job done you better, think again.  If you want to get a sliding screen door installed in your house or just need a few new window screens made and installed the best advice we can give you is call a professional mobile screen company to do the job right.

Here are some questions you should ask your handyman if you think he can do the screen job:

  1. Will he bow the frames? if done right the frames should be straight
  2. Will the window screen mesh be tight? if done the right way the fiber glass mesh should be tight
  3. What kind of mesh is he going to use? The best screen material is charcoal fiber glass not metal
  4. Is he going to make the screens himself or take them to a hardware store to get done?  If he takes them it should be a screen shop
  5. Does he use metal corners or plastic?  he needs to use metal corners or you will be calling him again shortly
  6. if he is installing a sliding screen door make sure the screen door has all metal parts and no plastic

Please know that we are not trying to criticize handyman services or local hardware stores that make screens but we are in the business of replacing sliding screen doors, windows screen replacement and re-screening and we see it and hear all the time when our clients call us to replace and redo a screen job gone wrong.  This happens a lot and fortunately for us we are in business because of this and we do very well.

Window screen repair for your home

It seems that a lot of the older windows are just not holding up anymore, after all some windows out there are over 40 years old. Today we have vinyl windows that are energy efficient and reduce the noise. One of the problems with the new vinyl windows is the plastic corners on the window screen frames, they just aren’t strong enough and they don’t last. On the other hand with the older aluminum windows most of the screen have good metal corners but are just to old to re-screen, so changing the frame on these screens is a must.

Replacing the Screens

New screen frames come in different colors to choose from so what we recommend is that you choose a color that matches you window encasement color for a better match or the color of your old screen frame so they look the same. New screens make your windows look years younger or better, actually the only thing you see in a window if the window screen mesh is old is the old screen.  It doesn’t matter if the windows are new or old when a screen mesh is old it turns gray and brittle and blocks your view making it easy to see. When a screen is new you should not see it, thats how clear you want you screen to be, unnoticeable.

Do your windows really need to be replaced?

You would be surprised what new window screens and new sliding screen doors could do for your windows. starting with the look, it makes a house look much better than is all the windows have gray old screens that can be seeing from the street.  You do not want to be able to tell that there are screens on windows, if  you can it’s time to do some home window repair and rescreen your windows A.S.A.P

Old Screens?

Window and door screens don’t last forever, you do have to rescreen your windows and doors at least every 8 to 10 years.  Waiting more than this just means your screens are old. When a screen is new the mesh is clear and you cant tell the screens there and it wont have any glare from the sun that will be noticeable from the inside of the house.

Installing replacement window screens

Spring is here and it’s time to replace the screens that are brittle and old, torn or even missing. Frames will usually last for years if they are all metal and no plastic corner but screen mesh material is another thing. Installing replacement window screens is a must on mesh that is over 7 to 10 years in age, screen mesh does not last for more than 7 to 10 years after that time they need to be replaced for new ones.

Good frames will last for years but the mesh will deteriorate fast especially with the sun hitting it all day, these will last mush less than 7 years. The sun exposure to window and door screens is an enemy that screens don’t do well with, as a matter of fact screens that are exposed to the sun last much less time than screens that are in the shade.

How do you know if you need to re-screen your windows:
If your screen material is white
If your screen mesh is gray
If your screen mesh is shinny
If you have holes in your screen
If you have bird tears in the screen
If your screen is missing
If the screen frame is bent
