Repair Screen

The Screen Frame

There are many ways to repair a screen, lets start with a sliding screen door. The most important part is the frame and the corners that actually hold it together, they need to be in good shape.  If the frame is off square because the metal corners are weakened then you might consider replacing it. The was to tell if you have this problem is to place your foot on the bottom frame of the screen door so it can’t move.

Next place your right and left hand on both right and left frames of the screen and gently rock it side by side.   If the top frame in the top channel slides an inch or two but not the bottom, your corners are weak. This does not always mean you will have to do a total screen replacement but the sliding screen will need to have work done on it.  Sometimes a simple adjustment will help the problem.

The Rollers

Now comes the second most important part the roller part.  There are two types, the plastic roller and the metal ball bearing roller, both do their job well.  The plastic wheel will last less the the metal and tend to crack and come off the track after a few years of wear and tear. Te metal wheels are the best and we recommend them to all our customers. they slide better on the the track t, they don’t stick or fall off the track, also they slide smootm.

The Handle

The handle on a screen door comes in, plastic and the colors are usually black and white.  The other type is a metal which usually comes only in and upgraded screen door from what comes when the home manufacture installs when the home is made. When a replacement sliding screen door is installed you have several options and some higher end screens come with metal handles. Some have a lock latch in and out.

The Screen Mesh Material

Last is the fiberglass mesh screen material, whatever you want to call it, bug screen, insect screen, mosquito mesh, it’s all the same, It keeps the bugs out! The three types of screen we carry are the pet screen, solar screen (sun screen) and the clear invisible screen which is the charcoal fiberglass screen. If your screen door is over 8 to 10 years old and the material is turning white or has lines running up and down on it, it’s time to rescreen it.  If you have a hole in it or a tear, it’s time to rewire it.

Keep in mind that all jobs are different and someone who specializes in screens should check them properly. You should have a mobile screen service come out and give you a free estimate, this will give you the proper diagnosis and a price up-front.  My areas are! When they stick they need to be repaired or they will grind your track down and let water into the encasement, a simple repair can become a very serious problem. New sliding screen door installation in Oak Park

We just installed a brand new sliding screen door in the city of Oak Park. The job order was for a white sliding door and it had to be a heavy duty frame because the customer had problems with dogs and cats climbing on the screen mesh material and kids running into it and pushing on the screen.

One thing that was a must for our client was that they did not want to have to take measurements and have to order the patio screen door by themselves so they hired us because we are totally mobile and do all our jobs onsite without making our client wait for service men to come and go, over and over again a few times to finish the job.  We do it in one day, clean up and we are done. The end results are you get a new, perfectly made custom sliding screen.

Rescreening an Andersen sliding screen door

A job I did in Oak Park rescreening a sliding screen door was done on the spot and the customer was very happy with it.  They asked for the clearest screen mesh for their Anderson screen door and I recommended the black, charcoal clear screen material which does not block your view but the also wanted a wire that would not tear with a cat or dog jumping on it, so I also showed them the new heavy duty Pet screen.

I showed them the new heavy duty Pet screen which is the strongest screen mesh material for pets, kids or simply anything that is going to be rough with the patio door.  The pet proof screen is 7 times stronger than regular window screen material and last much longer too. My areas are! Changing plastic corners in window screens

Plastic corners

When you see that your window screens aren’t holding up any more because the plastic corner are cracked and brittle, It’s time to change them or get new window screen frames made.  Depending on the shape of your screens there are two things that can be done with them. One option is to remove the old broken corners and replace them for new ones and colors are not a problem because we have white, gray, and brown.

If new frames are the only option for your home then the advantage of replacing them is the best option as far as better quality and long lasting.  Solid heavy duty frames, .025 gauge and thick metal corners with a miter cut to hide it inside giving the screen a better look and stronger hold.  metal last for years without any problems or wear and tear issues but plastic has a relatively short life cycle and when they turn yellow there is no repair and it’s hard to remove the screen from the window without cracking it.

Rescreening a Pella screen door

When it comes to special order, dealing with a Pella screen doors feels just like it.  Rescreening  these doors are a lot of work because they are so delicate and the spring that is incorporated on them is very fragile.  The auto closer system on this screen door work very good for a very long time.  The is manufacture makes the slider out of wood and aluminum and the spline channel area is very shallow and does not allow the screen  to be held strong enough for a lot of pressure being applied on the mesh it self by hands pushing on it.

The Pella slider screen come with plastic rollers that are adjustable on top and bottom and roll smooth. The handle is also plastic in and out with a light metal lock latch that, for being plastic works very well.  All the parts and design on the product is strange but does work and last well.  When I re-screen this porch door I have to make sure that the fiber glass mesh goes on straight and tight, because the channels are so small the rubber spline need to hold that screen hard.  Dogs and kids will test it’s strength and I don’t like to let my clients down.
