Spring is here and it’s time to open the windows and doors!  Are your window screens OK, or do they need to be repaired?  Screen repair can be quick and simple depending on who you call. The first thing thats assessed when  a screen repair job is started is:

  • How many window screens need to be fixed?
  • How many of the window screens that need to be fixed need new frames?
  • Is the sliding screen door sliding good?
  • Is the sliding screen doors frame OK?

If a screen door is torn or ripped and the frame is in good condition it can be re-screened, if a screen doors is bent or missing you wull need to have a new screen frame made custom for it.  Most screen repair is custom due to all the window manufactures that have come and gone, plus homes settle with time and this make sliding screen doors get jammed in their tracks. The options are simple and it’s all up to you on how many you want to repair and how much you want to spend.  Just keep in mind that screen material (mesh) life cycle is about 7 to 14 years , after that they should get replaced just like you would a air conditioning filter, a water filter or a car air filter.

Just about every window has a track or channel for screens, Some window screens can be taken in and out easy and some can’t be taken in and out at all. Repair Screen

The Screen Frame

There are many ways to repair a screen, lets start with a sliding screen door. The most important part is the frame and the corners that actually hold it together, they need to be in good shape.  If the frame is off square because the metal corners are weakened then you might consider replacing it. The was to tell if you have this problem is to place your foot on the bottom frame of the screen door so it can’t move.

Next place your right and left hand on both right and left frames of the screen and gently rock it side by side.   If the top frame in the top channel slides an inch or two but not the bottom, your corners are weak. This does not always mean you will have to do a total screen replacement but the sliding screen will need to have work done on it.  Sometimes a simple adjustment will help the problem.

The Rollers

Now comes the second most important part the roller part.  There are two types, the plastic roller and the metal ball bearing roller, both do their job well.  The plastic wheel will last less the the metal and tend to crack and come off the track after a few years of wear and tear. Te metal wheels are the best and we recommend them to all our customers. they slide better on the the track t, they don’t stick or fall off the track, also they slide smootm.

The Handle

The handle on a screen door comes in, plastic and the colors are usually black and white.  The other type is a metal which usually comes only in and upgraded screen door from what comes when the home manufacture installs when the home is made. When a replacement sliding screen door is installed you have several options and some higher end screens come with metal handles. Some have a lock latch in and out.

The Screen Mesh Material

Last is the fiberglass mesh screen material, whatever you want to call it, bug screen, insect screen, mosquito mesh, it’s all the same, It keeps the bugs out! The three types of screen we carry are the pet screen, solar screen (sun screen) and the clear invisible screen which is the charcoal fiberglass screen. If your screen door is over 8 to 10 years old and the material is turning white or has lines running up and down on it, it’s time to rescreen it.  If you have a hole in it or a tear, it’s time to rewire it.

Keep in mind that all jobs are different and someone who specializes in screens should check them properly. Replace Screen Door Thousand Oaks

When it is time to replace the screen door you need to know that their is sliding doors with plastic rollers and some with metal ones.  The wheels glide on the bottom and top tracks are what hold the door in place and this stops it from falling off track or getting stuck.  If the frame is to big then this to can be a problem with the way it slides.  The screen frame needs to fit good, you should have a half inch gap on the top of the track and on the bottom.

We can fix most problems by changing the rollers of the old frame and in most cases this takes care of the problem, unless the frames is bent.  If your door screen is warped or broken, sometimes it can be fixed but we must look at it first.  For us to come out give us a call, we come to you and all our estimates are free of charge.  My areas are! Screen Repair

Should you repair your screens or replace them?  The big question is often influenced by your wallet and and this can affect the look of your home and the function of your screens.  For starters fiberglass window screens last for about 10 years in good shape but for some people they last 20 years, just not in such good shape.  You should only replace the frames if they are missing, lost, bent or broken, if not rescreening the frame is fine and will cost less.

Another big item when screen fixing is the plastic corners, the yellow cracked corners that need replacing.  I specialize in changing these and putting on new ones and for only a fraction of the cost.  I do not use plastic on new window frames, I only use metal corners and they last for years without having to change them out.  For any service you need do yourself a favor and save yourself from getting into a mess, call me I’m a mobile service and would be happy to come to you.  My areas are!
